World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Fourth Sunday of Easter, May 11, 2003
What is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations? This is a
day that the Church has dedicated specifically to pray for
vocations. Why this particular day? In todays Gospel,
we read about the Good Shepherd who cares for his flock. He
has dedicated his whole life to the care of the sheep. He
not only knows them by name but is ready to lay down his life
for them. It is the story of Jesus our own Good Shepherd.
Jesus knows each of us by name and has laid down his life
for us.
As the Good Shepherd cares for his flock, we are called
to care for one anther in our family, in our Church and in
our world. This is the vocation of every Christian. The word
vocation comes from the word to call.
Each of us received a personal call at our Baptism. This call
was to be a follower of Jesus. It is an invitation to be more
like Jesus in all our thoughts, words and actions. We are
called to reach out to others as Jesus did. As shepherds,
we are called to love others and nurture Gods people.
The Church encourages us as followers of Jesus, to serve the
flock by fully living our chosen vocations as priest, religious,
married or single persons.
Today we pray for the whole Church and ask God to bless
each us in our specific vocation. We pray especially that
women and men may consider responding generously to the call
to give their lives as a priest, sister, or brother. May each
of us continue the work of the Good Shepherd by living our
lives within our specific vocation.
