Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada
Federation Board Meeting
Peterborough – October 12-15, 2005

Board members enjoyed the hospitality of our Peterborough Sisters this year for the annual meeting, October 12-15, 2005. With a welcome by Sister Joyce Murray, an opening night reception included those Sisters of the Peterborough congregation who could be present. The group heard words of greeting and encouragement from our President, Sister Patricia Hogan, and socialized to the delightful background piano music provided by Ms. Mary Curtin.

Thursday, October 13 offered a Day of Retreat, led by invited speaker, Sister Mary Ann Flanagan, IHM. The group was directed through contemplation on our response to the personal, interpersonal, societal and institutional challenges faced by leadership. The session moved through a reflection of the positive possibilities, under the influence of grace, for alternative modes of living and acting, choices that could change in small and larger ways, the negative forces among us.

Friday and Saturday moved us through sharing of congregational issues and items of concern germane to our Federation. Welcome presentations were made by Sisters Joan Atkinson and Suzanne Wilson from the Justice Office in the London Congregation, with particular emphasis on trafficking of women and Sister Mary Diesbourg, Director of the International Centre in Le Puy, who gave an informative update on progress of work in the new Centre.

Highlights for 2006 include the National Event, May 28-30, in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Federation. It was agreed that we will continue to hold central the issue of trafficking of women and children. This will be done by lobbying for policy change through government agencies and assisting in a more direct way with an exit facility and programmes that assist women trying to leave the sex trade.
