Fred was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He
was married to Arlene Della Valle for 34 years. Together they
raised 3 daughters Ann, Ellen and Lorraine. Five beautiful
and lively grandchildren bring much joy to Freds life.
Arlene died from breast cancer in 1996. Fred Married Anna
(née Cosgrove) in 2000.
Fred became involved with the Catholic Church in 1970 when
he made a Cursillo. His participation in the movement resulted
in his commitment to the Church.
Fred has been an associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph
of Sault Ste. Marie since 1987. He became involved with the
Sisters in the early 1980s when Arlene was assisting
Sister Lea Joanisse at the House of Prayer in Sault Ste. Marie.
When the Associate Program started, it was a natural transition
to join the Sisters on a more formal basis.
His faith journey has included being involved in various
social justice initiatives including an organization (Offing
Inc.) where is currently a member of the board of directors.
Offing is dedicated to the establishment and encouragement
of workers cooperatives. When Fred retired from Algoma
Steel, he got a part time job at a local funeral home as a
river, which he considers to be part of his ministry. He is
also a member of a group in his parish which assists in funerals.
With his wife Anna, he visits an Extendicare facility to conduct
a communion service for the Catholic residents. He also serves
the Church as an Auditor for the Marriage Tribunal. Fred believes
that his participation in these activities is his way of living
out his commitment to the "dear neighbour". The
Associate Program has strengthened his spiritual life by allowing
him to be involved with people of similar ideals and goals.
To add balance to his life, Fred is pursuing hobbies in
woodworking, which includes carving (decoys), and projects
for the home and grandchildren. His current passions are Anna
and an 800cc motorcycle!
