Meet Therese May, CSJ Peterborough Associate

Therese May
Therese May

I am Therese May, the Treasurer for our Peterborough Associate Community. I live in Baltimore, Ontario with my husband Barry. We have two grown children, Sara and Lee and one grandchild, Brayden, who is the “apple of our eye.” I am looking forward to retirement next year so I can actively pursue my hobbies of knitting, sewing, reading but more importantly, to spend more time with my family, Church involvements and especially the Associates.

I came from a family of five with close Irish ties to the Downeyville area. My involvement with the Sisters of St. Joseph goes back a long time ago; I have memories of numerous trips to the Mount as a child to visit my great-aunts, Sisters Clement and Mary of Victory and cousin Sister Angela Guiry.

At a Mom’s and Tot’s retreat at the Villa St. Joseph in Cobourg, I met two remarkable women, Sisters Shirley Tapp and Margaret Shannon. Thus began a joy-filled relationship that progressed quite naturally in 1986 to the Associate program. I was missioned in my commitment at the Mount in 1988 with all my family present for the celebration.

I was searching for “the more” in my faith life and the Sisters of St. Joseph became the “well” in the middle of my desert. It was like truly coming home. The charism of unity and reconciliation is one that resonates with me and my life as a professional, wife, mother, grandmother, member of my parish and my faith community. The gentleness, peace and joy of the Sisters helped me to calm my restless spirit and embark on a journey I could never have imagined. My Nazareth Community “sisters” have been a great source of comfort, joy, friendship and love, qualities that project out to our other communities when we are together.

I compare my journey as an Associate to the road to Emmaus. It is a long and winding road with twists, turns, up and downs but one where someone is always with me even if I am not aware of it. I have a much richer and fuller faith life and hopefully it projects out into my daily living and those I encounter along the way. We never recognize the Christ walking beside us unless we can acknowledge the Christ in us as well.

I thank God and my Associate sisters and brothers for allowing me to serve in the capacity as treasurer and on the leadership team. Together, we all make a wonderful cohesive group of women and men from all ages, life experiences and faith journey.

May the Christ in me forever bless the Christ in you.
Therese May
