Meet Pam Cupido, Companion of the Sisters of St. Joseph

Pam Cupido |
I am the youngest of seven children. From a very young age my faith has been an important part of my life. I had open-heart surgery at the age of 10, with a 50-50 chance of survival. Thanks to the surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff and all the prayers and support of family, friends, and parish community, I came through it and have been fine to the present.
All through my elementary and high school years, I was taught by Sisters. At St. Joseph’s School, Hamilton it was the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny. At Holy Rosary School, Burlington, Sister St. Julien was my principal. At Cathedral Girls’ High School, Hamilton, I had Sister Sheila, Sister Marina, Sister Leona, Sister Frances Thérèse, Sister Louise, and Sister Mary Ambrose. I really felt that the Sisters being in the schools as teachers or principals made a difference. Later, I worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton as a registered nurse. I worked with Sister Katrina on the cardiac unit. While at the hospital I came in contact with Sister Mary Austin also.
I now work as parish secretary at Holy Rosary Parish in Burlington and work with Sister Rosanne. I also worked with Sister Donalda at St. John the Baptist Parish in Burlington for a short time. So, when Sister Rosanne invited me to the charism evenings for the Companions, I agreed to attend. I found them very interesting and decided I wanted to become a Companion. I am happy I did.
I have been a Companion for 10 years now. I find the monthly meetings at the Motherhouse to be very supportive, prayerful, and faith filled. There are six Companions in our group. I feel the meetings help me to grow in my faith and also to live out my faith in my family, community, and parish ministries: the RCIA and visiting the sick.
I have often wondered about becoming a Sister and being a Companion has made me feel closer to the Sisters. I have met many wonderful people who have the same struggles, questions, and joys as myself. I am also grateful to the Sisters for sharing their charism of unity and reconciliation with us. I truly feel what our theme song says: “a companion on the journey” sharing the Good News with others and trying to spread the love of Christ to others.
