Meet Roberta Collins,
CSJ Associate Sault Ste. Marie

Roberta Collins,
CSJ Associate

For as long as I can remember, the Sisters of St. Joseph have influenced my life in ways I could not foresee.  Born in Sault Ste. Marie and attending a Catholic elementary school, I was fortunate to have had three Sisters of St. Joseph as teachers during my formative years.  High school found me at St. Joseph’s College boarding school in North Bay.  It was here that the charism of the Sisters claimed my heart and has continued to do so as the years go by.

I believe their dedication and ideals drew me to choose teaching as my way of serving God and instilling these same ideals in the hearts of children.

After many years of teaching, I made a career change.  A friend asked me to assist in setting up their business office in Toronto.  Here again the Sisters and their charism became part of my life.  Under the direction of a Toronto Sister of St. Joseph (Sister Mary Regis), my friend and I worked with the poor and elderly (prior to the associate programme).  Love of the dear neighbour was truly present.

I returned to the Sault to be with my mother and remained for a while following her death.  During this time I was invited to “Come and See”.  It was then that the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph again resonated in my heart and I knew that I found what would enrich my life and I made my commitment as an associate.

After two years I returned to Toronto to care for my friend until her death but now I reside permanently in Sault Ste. Marie, where I once again renewed my commitment as a CSJ associate.

As a CSJ associate my life is enriched in so many ways.  I am encouraged in my love of the Eucharist; our yearly programmes have deepened my personal prayer and I was surrounded with love and compassion during a difficult period by the Sisters and associates.  As an associate, I work with Sister Lea Joanisse, CSJ, Director of Shalom House of Prayer.  This involvement in the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph is both rewarding and fulfilling.

To be an associate  -  what an opportunity for ministry both in my life and in others.
