Meet Sister Teresa Casey

Sister Teresa Casey

Sr. Teresa Casey

Hi! My name is Sister Teresa Casey and I am a Sister of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie. I have been a Sister for 56 years and have been very happy. Many people have asked me why I became a Sister and why do I stay. From the time I was a little girl, I wanted to be a Sister. The Sisters of St. Joseph attracted me and I am convinced that one of my relatives, also a Sister, played a big part in my choice.

I spent much of my religious life teaching music at our convents. My last 35 years, I taught at Algoma University and Algoma Conservatory in Sault Ste. Marie. My first love of music came from my family. My father loved to sing and sang in the church choir. My older brother played the piano and had his own band until he went overseas in 1940.

Besides teaching, I have worked with the youth and spent many years working in Youth Encounters. I also had several choirs, one of which was a youth choir made up of 40 teenage girls.

In 1994, I retired from active ministry. I volunteered in the gift shop at the hospital in Sault Ste. Marie one day a week and the Catholic Centre two days a week. Because of illness, I moved to our Motherhouse in North Bay in August 1999. I have not been idle since moving here. I take my turn as the switchboard operator, help organize the liturgies here at the Motherhouse, work at the soup kitchen, and play the organ for one of the Sunday liturgies at Corpus Christi Parish.

Our charism of unity and reconciliation has been a wonderful help to me. Every day our charism brings me closer to my Creator God. Another thing that has helped me grow is our preferential option for the poor. Working with our Associates and being on the Outreach Committee has helped me realize how much I have and how much I can give to others.

Everyday, I thank God for my vocation and I ask Him to bring people to religious life for "the harvest is great but the laborers are few."
