What Do I Do?

Rae Edzo, Northwest Territories

For the past fifteen years I have lived and worked among the Dogrib First Nations People in the village of Rae Edzo, Northwest Territories. It is a small settlement of about 1,500 people. It is situated about 100 km from Yellowknife, NT.

Presently I am working in the parish community. In the early church the gifts of leadership, teaching, and helping out were seen as more circular and spread out. Roles and responsibilities belong to the whole people. Here in the parish, the people have been encouraged, challenged, and trained to assume all the responsibilities needed to establish and to maintain an active church community.

My ministry is basically to support and to encourage the people to remain committed participants in the service of the church. I help to train catechists, lecturers, and teachers of the faith. The sacramental preparations and the Sunday services are conducted by the Dogrib people in their own language. Each one of us is called to serve according to one’s call and one’s unique gifts. My ministry is to be with and to work among the people to make “our world a better home.”
