Let me introduce you to Sister Justina Mahoney, a Sister
of St. Joseph of the Diocese of London. She presently lives
at Mount St. Joseph in London, actively engaged in the prayer
and daily activity of this community. Sundays provide an extra
opportunity for Sister to express hospitality to the wide
range of parishioners who celebrate Eucharist in our Immaculate
Conception Chapel. Sister takes a keen interest in the goings
and comings of the young families and university students.
She is often found after Liturgy, meeting and greeting, wishing
them well for the upcoming week, noting their request for
prayer, and simply being a presence in the Sunday crowd. She
delights in the new babies and keeps in touch with the stresses
of university life. Sister Justina has a gentle way of expressing
true interest in everyone she meets.
Born in Mount Carmel, Ontario, Sister grew up with three
brothers and a sister. A recent trip to Houston, Texas to
visit her only living brother brought her into the environment
of Hurricane Katrina. Just being in the city where thousands
were housed in the stadium made her all the more aware of
the plight of so many homeless.
Trained in nursing, Sister Justina served in each of our
three Ontario Hospitals in London, Chatham, Sarnia, as well
as spending seventeen years in Alberta at our hospitals in
Killam and Galahad. Her memories of the Alberta Hospitals
convey the wonderful challenge of rising to whatever occasion
presented itself. Typically, bad weather often left the hospital
short staffed but the Sisters managed to fill in extended
shifts. The joy of such smaller settings was the opportunity
to come to know the people.
Sister Justina was drawn to community life by the example
of the Sisters who taught her. Indeed it was their faithfulness
to prayer and their way of life that caught her attention.
Now having lived fifty-six years among us CSJs, Sr.
Justina finds the writings of Father Ron Rolheiser to be helpful
encouragement for her continued faith journey.
When asked what is the glue that holds us together as community,
her response is: the support we give one another, the regular
pattern of daily prayer, the inner call that beckons us forward
together.
We think of our Motherhouse Sisters as women contemplatives
doing justice by being totally attentive to Gods love
and compassion. Sister Justina carries on our CSJ mission
by giving herself to this call every day and always.
